Boarding School Exchange at
Emma Willard School
Since 1814, Emma Willard School has provided challenging, inspiring, and enabling first-class education to girls in grades 9 through 12. Today, more than 200 years later, the Emma Willard School is a leader in girls’ education and recognized as one of the nation’s leading college-preparatory boarding and day schools in the US.
The Emma vision is to foster in each young woman a love of learning, the habits of an intellectual life, and the character, moral strength, and qualities of leadership to serve and shape her world. International students make up around 25% of the roughly 360 students every year and represent approximately 30-35 countries.
There are many benefits to an all-girls education. Experiencing higher levels of support from peers, teachers and school personnel; having higher aspirations and greater motivation than female peers at coeducational schools; and being challenged to achieve more and actively engage than female peers at coeducational schools are a few examples of these benefits.Â
The Emma experience offers excellent and global academics as well as social and personal growth through cultural exchanges with girls from around the world. International students quickly integrate at Emma Willard.
But Emma Willard is more than that. Aside from strong academics and more than 160 courses, Emma Willard provides the opportunity to bond across classrooms, residence and dining halls, and weekends with your new friends. Choose between 14 sports and 40+ clubs, relax with your new friends, or explore the nearby towns of Troy, Saratoga Springs, and Albany, the New York state capital.

ACADEMICS
Emma’s leading position as a college-preparatory school is in large part due its excellent academics. The goal of academics at Emma is to focus each girl’s future aspirations, and equip them with the interdisciplinary knowledge that competitive colleges are looking for.
The small average class sizes of 14 students and a student-teacher ratio of 6:1 enable the girls to engage in discourse that brings context to high-level concepts and further their understanding of the world.
SUBJECTS
Emma Willard offers around 140 standard courses as well as 19 Advanced Placement courses that further prepare students for the academic expectations of a college or university education. Courses are split into 8 areas:Â
Arts | English | History | Languages (French, Spanish, Latin, and Chinese) | Mathematics | Science | Technology | Athletics & Physical Education
UNIQUE PROGRAMS
In addition to its standard and AP courses, Emma also offers three personalized study programs which enable girls to dive deep into a topic or field of their choosing, and gain hands-on experience:
Signature is Emma’s capstone program for juniors and seniors. Students spend the year working with a mentor in their chosen field and produce a final project or presentation.
Practicum is an independent study program which pairs students with mentors, faculty advisors, coaches, peers, and alumnae, to guide them as they gain hands-on experience in their chosen topic.
STEAM Research .5 is a year-long research program for juniors and seniors interested in doing projects or research in science, math, technology, engineering, or the arts. These research opportunities are intended for advanced study in a STEAM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
THE BOARDING EXPERIENCE
Education at Emma isn’t limited to the classroom—the bonds created between Emma Girls in the residence and dining halls, while practicing for an athletics match or arts performance, and all the little moments in between, define many girls’ Emma experience.
