Since the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School first opened its doors in 1903, the school has become a national leader among boarding and day schools. Rabun Gap’s motto is “Lead the Way,” and the school is proud of its high standards. Students experience a nurturing and supportive environment which offers many opportunities to try new things, develop and enhance their talent, and put forth their very best effort, be it in academics or in their personal life.

With a population of 600 students, including students from 50+ countries and 18 states, Rabun Gap is one of the most geographically diverse school in the USA. This means that at Rabun Gap, you’ll find yourself in an empowering and uplifting community where students benefit from the unique opportunity to interact and connect with peers from all walks of life. Rabun Gap’s diverse and vibrant campus sets it apart from most independent schools in the United States.

Rabun Gap is situated in the southern foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains where the hiking possibilities are endless. Moreover, as a student at Rabun Gap, you’re only two hours away from major cities such as Atlanta in Georgia, Asheville in North Carolina, and Greenville in South Carolina.

ACADEMICS

Rabun Gap offers a classical liberal arts curriculum and a wide array of cultural activities. The school’s faculty are passionate about their subjects and dedicated to student success. Therefore, teachers at Rabun Gap have an average of 12 students each to ensure that teaching is personal and close. Because of the school’s excellent academics, 100% of the students earn acceptances from top colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad. 

SUBJECTS

The school offers core courses in the humanities, mathematics, and science. Additionally, students can specialize their education and pursue their academic interests in a variety of elective classes:

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

In addition to the core courses, Rabun Gap also offers 16 Advanced Placement courses in all academic departments at the Upper School. Over 30% of Upper School students take at least one AP class, and over the past three years, more than 80% of the school’s AP students earned a 3 or higher on their AP exams, potentially earning college credit prior to high school graduation.

UNIQUE PROGRAMS

Rabun Gap also has a Research Curriculum of year-long, grade-level research projects spanning different disciplines. Seniors engage in more individual research projects based on their emerging academic interests, and these research efforts are showcased at the annual Academic Symposium, where student work is evaluated by judges from local colleges and universities. 

THE BOARDING EXPERINCE

Simply put, boarding at Rabun Gap gives you more – more community, more independence, more experiences, more friendships. This experience prepares students for life in college and beyond as their are guided through their personal, academic, and social lives. Rabun Gap’s boarding community is very unique because it’s home to students from more than 50 countries. Boarding students have the opportunity to connect with roommates from across the globe. Around 80 percent of Upper School students are a part of the boarding program. 

The After School program at Rabun Gap is designed to strengthen the students’ mental and social well-being. Get involved in one or several of their 20+ different clubs and organizations, a small selection of which include:

ATHLETICS

If you’re more interested in sports, the opportunities are endless! In each of its three athletic seasons, Rabun Gap offers wide selection of teams. Choose from:

SPARE TIME

In your spare time, you can explore the amazing outdoor facilities including Indian Lake, a climbing tower, ropes course, and hiking trails. Boarding students also enjoy regular weekend trips to the theater, restaurants, shopping malls, sporting events, and cultural festivals. The school also arranges combined Travel Studies, where students in the past have visited Hawaii, Italy, and France as well as other local and national destinations.
