Boarding School Exchange at
The Macduffie School

The MacDuffie School is a rigorous college preparatory school, which has been educating students since 1890. The school’s mission is to foster in all students the intellectual habits of mind, high ethical standards, and respect for diversity required for becoming effective individuals in their personal and work lives and moral and responsible participants in the world beyond.

Here, students experience a culture and a community that is both challenging and supportive–a community that encourages students to explore their interests and to discover new possibilities. Macduffie provides the environment and curriculum for students to improve their language skills, explore leadership opportunities, and successfully build the academic and professional skills necessary for success.

MacDuffie’s 180 students are a mix of local boarding and day students and international boarding students. The school community is open, welcoming and global, and international students make up 50% of the student body, representing 25 different countries.

MacDuffie’s location is ideal for the international student. Located in Western Massachusetts on 254 acres of undeveloped New England greenery, students have easy access to both Boston to the east and New York City to the south.

Outside the classroom, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved and make new friends, be it on the sports field, during extracurricular activities, or visiting the local day students.

ACADEMICS

The MacDuffie School has a long tradition of providing a rigorous academic college preparatory program. Our curriculum is designed around the liberal arts tradition where students are educated in many subjects and have opportunities for integrated learning experiences. Students at The MacDuffie School will find a curriculum that includes a focus on leadership development, global stewardship, and appreciation for diversity.

SUBJECTS

MacDuffie’s curriculum spans seven academic departments:

Arts | English | Physical & Health Education | History | Mathematics | Science | World Languages

Together, the seven departments cover a wide variety of courses, including 33 AP and Honors courses. With a student-teacher ratio of 7:1 and an average class size of 11, each student is always in focus.

For students interested in health science careers, MacDuffie has an outstanding partnership opportunity with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) that guarantees admission to MCPHS for qualified students.

UNIQUE PROGRAMS

MacDuffie strives to prepare international students for success at American colleges or universities upon graduation, and therefore, an English Language Learners  ELL program is available to assist non-native speakers with English proficiency.

The Path to Excellence is designed to help each student take advantage of all the academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities offered by the school, and thus to receive the full benefit of the MacDuffie experience.

During their time at MacDuffie, every student must fulfill a leadership requirement through the Leadership Program. As a core value, leadership holds a prominent role in the school community. The program covers public speaking, individual and group leadership projects, community service, practicum, and an online portfolio presented during the Senior year.

THE BOARDING EXPERIENCE

International students may choose between the Residential or Homestay programs. Boarding students live together on campus in double and single rooms with a caring residential life staff. Homestay students live with an American host family, thus experiencing American living first-hand. Day students often invite international students to visit their homes on weekends and for holidays such as Thanksgiving and Winter and Spring Breaks.

EXTRACURRICULARS

Taking part in extracurricular activities is an important part of the MacDuffie experience, giving students leadership opportunities and promoting a well-rounded education. Participation in one activity per season is required, but more than 60% of students engage in two or more clubs and activities. There’s something for everyone at MacDuffie. Choose between:

Linguistics Club | Photography | Choir | Smash-X (outdoor winter activities) | Theater | International Politics | Jazz | Cooking | Anime | Volunteer Work | Chess | Dance | Film | Student Government | Key Club | Publications | Yearbook | Swim Club | Model U.N. | Ball Hockey |  Improvisational Acting

ATHLETICS

Get used to shouting “GO MUSTANGS!” MacDuffie’s after-school interscholastic athletic program is an important part of the educational experience, and the school offers a variety of teams for both boys and girls during all three seasons:

Soccer | Volleyball | Cross Country | Basketball | Swimming | Badminton | Baseball | Golf | Lacrosse | Tennis | Track & Field | Ultimate Frisbee

SPARE TIME

Boarding students weekend activities take advantage of the regional attractions, beauty and culture of New England, and include:

Apple Picking | Pumpkin Carving | Skiing | Roller Skating | Classical & Pop Concerts | Museums | Athletic Events | Fairs | Theater Performances | Shopping Trips

Students also take advantage of the wide range of events and activities at nearby colleges such as Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Williams, as well as the many colleges and universities in Boston, only 90 minutes away. Special weekend trips during the year are often planned to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. as well.
